It should really come without saying that as we continue in our faith journey, that a deep, penetrating desire to bask and saturate in God’s Word should be developed. Now, that may seem obvious and very elementary to some. But I have heard people say things like, “I don’t like to read” or “I fall asleep” or “It’s hard for me to pay attention.” Let me assure you: Getting in the Bible and diving into it is essential. So whether it’s a hardback, paperback, iPad, Kindle, or cell phone – pray about it, get in, dig deep, read and glean. Listen to it in audio if you must; but still follow along with it, and read.
I am hoping to convince you to read every day this week. Yes, that is 7 days in a row (to start), and then, everyday beyond that. But let’s start with 7 days for right now. Here are 3 Reasons for it. There are more, no doubt, but let’s start with these 3:
- The Word of God is a powerful, fascinating, life-giving volume. Don’t ever allow someone to tell you or convince you that the Bible is boring or void. If someone says that or attempts to sell that, they aren’t approaching it the correct way. Don’t listen to it. Their perspective is off. There are incredible records in the Bible that demonstrate God’s love and provision, His presence and power, mankind’s predicament and situation, and how true victory has been poured out and made available to all. Stories of love and war, conquest and failure, blessing and mission. It comes alive!
- The Word of God is set apart, and different, from every other book in the world. This may surprise some: The Bible isn’t really a book at all. It is a collection of 66 smaller books, gospels, and letters. It has been written by 40 different authors across a few continents and many centuries. It has been preserved, organized, and given to us despite incredible efforts to destroy it and ban it, permanently.
- The Word of God has influenced the world like no other book(s). It is divinely inspired. It speaks to the current generation no matter how technological savvy or enlightened we believe we are. The Bible stands the test of time with truth. It imparts life and hope, love and wisdom. The Word of God has shaped more than missionaries and pastors – it has been instrumental to nations, presidents, and kings. Most importantly, it has been a resource, utilized by God, to change and transform lives. The lives and the hearts of God’s people.
We could go on, and on, and on. Let me throw this at you, lastly: Did you know that if you read 12-15 minutes, each day, you can read through God’s Word in 1 year? But more important than a reading plan or a schedule is this reality: If you dedicate yourself to reading and gleaning the Word of God and ask for God’s direction each day/time, you will be blessed. When we come to His Word with the right motives, and seek to know Him better and more intimately, I know He will bless it.
If you need help selecting a Bible, or if you are confused with all the “versions” that are available, let me know. You can email me at pastorpg@bridgewaync.org. If you don’t have one or can’t afford a Bible, don’t hesitate in letting me know ~ I/we will get you a copy right away.
I love this quote by Charles Spurgeon: “A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.”
Blessings in and over your reading,
Pastor Porter
